Despite ongoing geopolitical developments in the Middle East, Umrah travel from South Africa appears to be continuing with minimal disruption, according to a leading local travel operator.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a representative from a popular Umrah travel agency said that, contrary to widespread concern, flights and travel arrangements for pilgrims have largely remained stable in recent weeks.

“From our side, Umrah flights have been going well,” the agent said. “We have not experienced major disruptions affecting the majority of our clients.”

The agent highlighted the role of airlines such as Emirates Airlines in maintaining consistency during a period marked by uncertainty.

“Emirates has been very accommodating. They have kept us updated, and we are in continuous contact with them regarding any developments,” the agent explained.

While the overall experience has been smooth, there have been isolated incidents. The agency noted a case from last month in which one client was temporarily stuck in Dubai because flights were not operational at the time. The pilgrim arranged their own accommodation before successfully securing a return flight from Jeddah.

However, the agent emphasised that such cases have been rare and not reflective of the broader situation.

“We have not had other clients needing additional accommodation or facing extended delays,” they said.

The agent acknowledged that some travellers using other airlines have reportedly encountered challenges, though these were not experienced directly by their own clients.

This, they said, underscores the importance of booking through reputable travel agencies.

“As agents, we are constantly monitoring flight systems and staying in daily contact with airlines. That allows us to respond quickly and support our clients if anything changes,” the agent added.

The uncertainty surrounding the region has also influenced traveller behaviour. According to the agency, some pilgrims initially cancelled their Umrah plans due to safety concerns linked to developments in the Middle East.

“People were understandably anxious and chose to cancel,” the agent said. “But many of them later rebooked, and we were able to assist them through that process.”

For Muslims, the opportunity to perform Umrah remains deeply significant, often described as a spiritual journey of renewal and devotion. Despite external uncertainties, the continued accessibility to travel has provided reassurance to those seeking to fulfil this act of worship.

The agent encouraged prospective pilgrims to remain informed and to seek guidance from trusted travel professionals when planning their journey.

For now, the overall experience for many pilgrims remains stable despite ongoing developments in the region.
