The Islamic civilisation of Africa series
Imam Abdullah Haron challenged apartheid from the minbar, but his resistance did not stop at the mosque. He carried his message into communities divided by apartheid’s laws, spoke out against the Group Areas Act and stood firmly against a system he described as unjust and un-Islamic. In 1969, Imam Haron was detained for 123 days and interrogated almost daily. He was martyred in police custody at the age of 45. The following day, more than 30,000 people walked with his janazah through the streets of Cape Town.
