As the Global Sumud Flotilla 2026 prepares to sail toward Gaza, alongside a parallel land convoy carrying aid and activists, South African solidarity groups are ramping up a coordinated national campaign in support of the mission.

At least three South Africans are expected to be part of the flotilla and land convoy. The announcement follows a send-off event held in Lenasia on Freedom Day, where activists gathered to support the local participants.

Organisers say this year’s flotilla, made up of around 40 vessels, is expected to be the largest of its kind, carrying increased humanitarian aid toward Gaza.

For security reasons, the identities of South African delegates are being withheld and will only be made public once they are safely en route.

A key focus of the campaign will be Richards Bay, where activists plan a mass protest alongside community engagement. Smaller solidarity actions are also expected across the country on 15 May, with groups encouraged to record messages supporting both the flotilla and a proposed coal embargo campaign.

Speaking to One Nation Media at a send-off event held in Lenasia on Freedom Day, delegates, whose identities are being withheld for security reasons, shared the personal motivations behind their decision to join both initiatives.

A delegate preparing to join the flotilla described the personal cost of participation, saying leaving his family behind was difficult but necessary.

“Watching that genocide being live-streamed, and sitting and doing nothing, I don’t understand how that can even be human,” he said.

Another delegate, who will join the land convoy, said he sees the suffering of Gaza’s children reflected in South African children and feels a responsibility to act.

“When I look at children here in South Africa, I see the children of Gaza, and I can’t ignore that,” he told One Nation Media.

As the mission moves forward, the focus now shifts from intention to impact, whether these efforts will translate into real change for Palestinians on the ground.
