But behind the official rhetoric of support for the Nigerien army lie several questions: What exactly was the mission of the Algerian aircraft? Why intervene after the Russians had already played a role? And has Algiers crossed the threshold into military intervention abroad?

On 30 August 2026, Algeria’s Ministry of National Defence announced that two patrols of fighter jets had been deployed “on a support mission to the Nigerien army”, at the request of the authorities in Niamey and on the instructions of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Why after the Russians?

The timing of the operation is revealing. The attempted mutiny on 29 August affected Niamey’s Air Base 101, with loyalist forces eventually regaining control with the support of Russia’s Africa Corps.

The arrival of the Algerian Su-30s the following day therefore raises a strategic question: was Algiers solely seeking to support the Tiani regime, or was it also signalling that it intends to preserve its own role in shaping security across the Sahel?

Russia has demonstrated its ability to intervene militarily alongside an allied Sahelian government. Algeria is now showing that it too possesses the capability and political will to project military assets into its strategic neighbourhood.

The presence of Algerian fighter jets could serve several purposes, from deterrence and aerial surveillance to the protection of strategic sites or support for Nigerien forces. The reported presence of a tanker aircraft also suggests an intention to keep the fighters operational for an extended period.

According to Ahmed Mizab, an Algerian expert on geopolitical and security affairs, the deployment forms part of a “forward defence” strategy. Faced with cross-border threats, against a backdrop of increasingly interconnected attacks by insurgent groups including JNIM and Islamic State, Algeria is seeking to act before those threats reach its own territory.

Mizab summarises the approach as: “Adapt the tools, not change the doctrine.”

For him, the mission does not necessarily mean Algeria is abandoning its traditional doctrine of non-intervention. Rather, it reflects an adaptation of its capabilities to a security environment in which the stability of neighbouring states has become inseparable from Algeria’s own security.

Toufik Bougaada, a professor of political science at the University of Algiers, similarly believes the deployment shows that Algiers no longer wants to remain a spectator to developments in the Sahel. He sees the move as part of a broader desire to play a more active role in the region’s security architecture. In this reading, Niger represents a kind of “first line of defence” for Algeria.

A genuine foreign intervention?

This is the most sensitive question.

Algeria’s 2020 Constitution opened the possibility of military deployments abroad under certain conditions. Article 91 provides that the president may decide to send units of the People’s National Army abroad after securing approval from two-thirds of the members of each chamber of Parliament.

It would therefore be premature to claim that the deployment represents a break with Algeria’s constitutional framework or military doctrine. The crucial issue is the nature of the mission assigned to the aircraft.

If their role is limited to deterrence, surveillance or assistance, Algiers can present the operation as an extension of its security cooperation with Niamey. If the Su-30s were to become directly involved in combat operations, however, Algeria’s level of involvement would be qualitatively different.

The operation nevertheless points to a significant political shift.

In 2023, following the overthrow of Mohamed Bazoum, Algeria condemned the coup and favoured a diplomatic solution. It also opposed possible military intervention by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) against Niger’s new military authorities.

Today, General Abdourahamane Tiani’s government is receiving explicit military support from Algeria.

This does not necessarily mean Algiers has reversed its position on the 2023 coup. Rather, it may reflect a reordering of priorities: the stability of Niger is increasingly being treated as a security imperative that outweighs earlier political differences with the authorities in Niamey.

Haj Belghouthi, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Algerian National Assembly, has presented the operation as an expression of “good neighbourliness” and a means of confronting terrorism, cross-border trafficking and attempts to destabilise the region.

Economics and regional rivalry

The military dimension cannot be separated from Algeria’s economic interests in Niger.

Cooperation between the two countries extends to electricity, hydrocarbons and infrastructure. That gives a broader meaning to the concept of “forward defence”. Securing Niger also means protecting the political and security environment required for Algerian investments and strategic projects to develop.

The deployment can also be interpreted as an attempt by Algiers to regain the initiative amid the growing influence of external actors, including Morocco — Algeria’s principal regional rival — as well as Israel and the United Arab Emirates.

The move also sends a message to the Alliance of Sahel States (AES): Algiers intends to position itself as a security partner that Bamako, Ouagadougou and Niamey can rely on when confronted with a serious threat.

The operation comes amid suspicions of possible external involvement in the attempted coup in Niger. There is currently no publicly available evidence identifying any potential masterminds, although Russian sources have suggested that external forces may have sought to destabilise the Tiani government.

Algiers may share elements of that strategic assessment without necessarily coordinating its actions with Moscow. The two powers nevertheless have an overlapping interest: preventing external destabilisation from undermining their respective positions and interests in Niger.

What’s next?

The Algerian Su-30s reportedly remain active in Nigerien airspace, and their mission could evolve in several directions.

In the short term, their presence is most likely to serve a deterrent purpose, helping protect Niamey and other strategic sites. In the medium term, Algeria could expand aerial surveillance, intelligence gathering and military cooperation with the Nigerien armed forces.

The most sensitive scenario would be direct involvement against insurgent groups.

Such a development would confront Algeria with a major strategic dilemma. By entering the war against insurgents inside Niger, Algiers would risk moving from the role of regional mediator to that of belligerent. It could also make Algerian forces and interests direct targets for armed groups operating across the Sahel.

The more cautious option for Algiers would therefore be to maintain a limited, deterrent and reversible military presence — supporting Niamey without becoming drawn into a prolonged conflict.

That is the central dilemma now facing Algeria.

The deeper it becomes militarily involved in the Sahel, the greater its potential security influence becomes. But greater military involvement also risks weakening one of Algiers’ most important diplomatic assets: its ability to present itself as a mediator rather than a party to the conflict.

The deployment of four Algerian Su-30 fighter jets to Niger, a day after an attempted coup against the regime of General Abdourahamane Tiani, amounts to far more than a simple gesture of military solidarity.
