As the only mosque serving the town\u2019s Muslim community, it continues to unite worshippers from diverse backgrounds while nurturing a new generation of Muslims in the Central Karoo.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Built in 1984 under the auspices of the Karoo Islamic Association, the mosque was established through the efforts of the late Sheikh Yusuf Karan, Suleman Bhayat, Ebrahim Mohamed and the Essop family. Their vision was to provide a permanent place of worship for the region\u2019s Muslims and preserve Islam\u2019s presence in an area with a rich but often overlooked Islamic history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to local activist Mohamed Amin Adams, the mosque\u2019s future became uncertain during the apartheid era as many Muslim families left the Central Karoo and the congregation dwindled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnfortunately, due to a decline in the Muslim population in the Central Karoo during the apartheid era, this mosque stood dormant for many years until the arrival of the Somali \u00e9migr\u00e9 community in the mid-1990s,\u201d Adams told One Nation Media (ONM).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although the masjid experienced years of inactivity, Adams said Islam\u2019s roots in Beaufort West stretch back long before its construction. Muslim graves dating to the late 1800s bear witness to the town\u2019s longstanding Islamic presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The growth of the local Muslim community has historically been driven by immigrants who made Beaufort West their home. Among the earliest were the Pashtun brothers Essop and Mohamed, who established a successful wool transportation business in the early 1900s and helped lay the foundations of a thriving Muslim community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the current mosque was built, the original Indian settlers established a mosque in New Street. It was later relocated under the Group Areas Act, with the present-day masjid in Hooyvlakte becoming the spiritual home of Beaufort West\u2019s Muslims and carrying that legacy through decades of social and political change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, the Muslim community comprises more than 50 families, as well as many single men from Bangladesh, Pakistan and several African countries. Many have settled permanently, established businesses and raised families in the town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond serving as a place of worship, Al Barakah wal Hidaya Masjid has also become an important centre for Islamic education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adams said the masjid\u2019s maktab currently caters for more than 60 students, around one-third of whom are reverts to Islam. The growing number of learners reflects both the expansion of the Muslim community and increasing interest in Islam among local residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite this encouraging growth, sustaining the mosque remains a significant challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur greatest challenge is fundraising for our mosque and its related work,\u201d Adams said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like many smaller Muslim communities across South Africa, the mosque depends heavily on donors and the wider Muslim community to maintain its facilities, support Islamic education and fund community initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite these financial pressures, Al Barakah wal Hidaya Masjid continues to fulfil a role far greater than that of a building. It provides a place of worship, learning, belonging and unity for Muslims living hundreds of kilometres from South Africa\u2019s larger Islamic centres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its existence reflects the enduring contribution of generations of immigrants who helped establish Islam in the Karoo and the resilience of a community determined to preserve its faith for future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Beaufort West\u2019s only mosque continues to welcome worshippers from around the world, it stands as a reminder that even in some of South Africa\u2019s most remote communities, Islam continues to flourish through perseverance, sacrifice and community spirit.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For more than four decades, Al Barakah wal Hidaya Masjid has stood as a symbol of resilience, faith and hope in the heart of Beaufort West.
