There are moments in pregnancy when the world falls silent, writes Neelam Rahim.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Long after everyone else has fallen asleep, a mother lies awake with one hand resting gently upon her abdomen, waiting for the next tiny movement. She whispers du\u2019as that only Allah hears. She wonders about the soul growing beneath her heart. Will this child be healthy? Will they grow to love Allah? Will they be among the righteous? And quietly, she asks herself another question: will I be enough?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I write these words, I find myself reflecting upon my own journey through pregnancy. It has been a path of immense gratitude, but also one marked by uncertainty, exhaustion and moments of quiet fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every ache, every sleepless night and every visit to the doctor has reminded me how little control we truly possess. We make plans, count the weeks and eagerly await each milestone, yet every heartbeat belongs to Allah alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pregnancy is often spoken about as a medical journey or biological process. Yet for the believer, it is something far greater. It is an act of worship wrapped in patience, sacrifice and tawakkul \u2014 complete reliance upon Allah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a silent striving for the sake of Allah, lived through countless unseen moments of endurance. Perhaps this is the silent jihad of pregnancy: not fought with weapons or words, but with patience, prayer and unwavering trust in the decree of our Creator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allah (SWT) says: \u201cHis mother carried him with hardship and gave birth to him with hardship.\u201d (Surah Al-Ahqaf 46:15)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elsewhere, He (SWT) reminds us that a mother carries her child \u201cin weakness upon weakness\u201d before commanding us to show gratitude to our parents. (Surah Luqman 31:14)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These verses are remarkable. Before Allah commands children to honour their parents, He first honours the mother\u2019s struggle. He acknowledges what so often goes unseen: the physical pain, emotional burden and countless sacrifices made long before a child enters the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps that is why pregnancy teaches one of life\u2019s greatest lessons: surrender. However carefully we plan, the life growing within us remains entirely in Allah\u2019s Hands. The child we carry is an amanah \u2014 a sacred trust \u2014 and every kick, every heartbeat and every breath occurs by His permission alone.<\/p>\n\n\n

Even Maryam (AS), one of the greatest women to have ever walked this earth, experienced fear during childbirth. Alone beneath a date palm, she cried:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, I wish I had died before this and had been completely forgotten.\u201d (Surah Maryam 19:23)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These words are deeply comforting. They remind us that feeling overwhelmed does not make a woman weak in faith. If Maryam (peace be upon her) experienced fear and anguish, then mothers today should never feel ashamed of their own struggles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allah responded to her not with reproach, but with mercy, providing water, fresh dates and reassurance when she needed them most.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) likewise elevated the status of mothers in a way that transformed society forever. When asked who was most deserving of a person\u2019s good companionship, he replied: \u201cYour mother.\u201d Then again: \u201cYour mother.\u201d Then a third time: \u201cYour mother.\u201d Only after that did he say: \u201cThen your father.\u201d (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those words carry even greater meaning when one reflects upon pregnancy. Before a child has uttered a single word or taken a single step, a mother has already sacrificed her comfort, sleep, strength and often her own health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This reality is beautifully captured in a narration from Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). A Yemeni man was carrying his elderly mother on his back while performing tawaf around the Ka\u2019bah. Believing that he had finally repaid her kindness, he asked Ibn Umar whether he had fulfilled her rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ibn Umar replied: \u201cNo \u2014 not even for a single contraction she suffered while giving birth to you.\u201d (Al-Adab al-Mufrad)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One contraction. Not nine months of pregnancy and not childbirth as a whole, but just one contraction. How, then, can any child ever truly repay what their mother endured?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Islam also teaches us that no hardship borne by a believer is ever wasted. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: \u201cNo fatigue, nor disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim \u2014 even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn \u2014 but that Allah expiates some of his sins because of it.\u201d (Bukhari and Muslim)<\/p>\n\n\n

For the expectant mother, this hadith carries immense comfort. Every moment of discomfort, every anxious night and every painful step is known to Allah. Nothing escapes His knowledge, and nothing endured with patience is without reward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why pregnant women deserve our compassion. A kind word, an offered seat, help with a heavy load or simply making sincere du\u2019a for her may seem like small acts, but they reflect the mercy that Islam calls us to embody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pregnancy is a burden carried quietly, and often the greatest support comes through the smallest acts of kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Allah\u2019s mercy is also evident in the concessions He grants. A pregnant woman who fears harm to herself or her unborn child is permitted to postpone fasting during Ramadan according to the rulings of Islamic jurisprudence, for Allah says: \u201cAllah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship.\u201d (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For some families, however, pregnancy is accompanied by unimaginable loss. Some mothers experience miscarriage, a grief known intimately by Allah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prophet (peace be upon him) brought hope to grieving parents by teaching that children who die before maturity will intercede for their believing parents by Allah\u2019s permission. Likewise, a woman who dies because of childbirth is counted among the martyrs, a testament to the immense honour Allah places upon the sacrifices of motherhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pregnancy, life and death<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My own pregnancy became a journey of joy intertwined with grief. Months into this pregnancy, Allah called my mother back to Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I prepared to welcome my third child into the world, I was forced to say goodbye to the woman who first carried me beneath her own heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is something profoundly humbling about feeling your baby move while mourning your mother. In those moments, I found myself thinking less about the challenges of my own pregnancy and more about what she must have endured for me: the nausea she never spoke about, the sleepless nights I never witnessed and the silent du\u2019as she made long before I knew how to make du\u2019a for myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps that is why Allah commands us: \u201cDo not even say to them, \u2018uff,\u2019 nor repel them, but speak to them with noble words.\u201d (Surah Al-Isra 17:23)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we truly reflect upon pregnancy, that command no longer feels merely like an obligation. It feels like gratitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I await the arrival of my child, my du\u2019as have changed. I no longer ask only for a safe delivery. I ask Allah to grant him a heart attached to the Qur\u2019an, a life filled with sincerity and the character of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). I ask Him to make me worthy of the trust He has placed in me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pregnancy has taught me that jihad is not always found on a battlefield. Sometimes it is found in the quiet moments no one else sees: the nausea before dawn, the tears after a difficult day, the whispered du\u2019as in the darkness and the unwavering trust in Allah despite uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a silent striving marked by patience, faith and complete reliance upon our Lord.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Five months into my pregnancy, the woman who first carried me beneath her heart was laid to rest in the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, as I wait to cradle my own child, I understand more deeply than ever why Allah honoured mothers before He commanded children to honour them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps that is the silent jihad of pregnancy: to carry life through hardship, to place complete trust in Allah and to love a child with a depth they may only truly understand when, one day, they carry a life beneath their own heart.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
