{"id":5660,"date":"2026-06-22T01:36:05","date_gmt":"2026-06-21T23:36:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/1nationmedia.com\/?p=5660"},"modified":"2026-06-22T01:36:08","modified_gmt":"2026-06-21T23:36:08","slug":"african-development-bank-and-unicef-launch-54-8m-water-project-in-sudan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/1nationmedia.com\/index.php\/2026\/06\/22\/african-development-bank-and-unicef-launch-54-8m-water-project-in-sudan\/","title":{"rendered":"African Development Bank and UNICEF launch $54.8m water project in Sudan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The African Development Bank Group and UNICEF have launched a $54.8 million emergency project to restore safe water and sanitation services for hundreds of thousands of people in Port Sudan.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Port Sudan Emergency Water and Sanitation Project was launched on June 9 and is being financed by the African Development Fund, the Bank Group\u2019s concessional arm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project will be implemented by UNICEF and aims to support access to safe water for up to 750,000 people, including around 600,000 residents of Port Sudan. More than a third of those supported are internally displaced people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Port Sudan has come under severe pressure since the outbreak of Sudan\u2019s war, with large numbers of displaced families arriving in the city and overwhelming already fragile services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the African Development Bank, water supply in Port Sudan is currently meeting less than 40% of demand, leaving children and families at greater risk of waterborne diseases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The initiative will also improve sanitation services for around 200,000 people and extend support to vulnerable communities in other conflict-affected areas, including towns in North and South Kordofan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">UNICEF said the project will focus on restoring damaged water systems and expanding sanitation and hygiene services in communities, schools and health facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work will include rehabilitating critical water infrastructure, including water sources, pipelines and distribution networks, as well as expanding sanitation services and promoting safe hygiene practices to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project will also strengthen local water authorities to help sustain essential services and ensure access for vulnerable groups, including children and displaced families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cChildren in Sudan are paying the highest price of this crisis,\u201d said Sheldon Yett, UNICEF Representative for Sudan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhen water systems fail, children are the first to suffer, from disease, from missed school, and from heightened protection risks.
