Nkosi Mandla Zwelivelile Mandela, grandson of former South African president Nelson Mandela, has emerged as the African National Congress\u2019s preferred candidate for the mayoral position in the King Sabata Dalindyebo Local Municipality in Mthatha, Eastern Cape.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development signals a possible return to frontline executive politics for Mandela ahead of South Africa\u2019s next local government elections, scheduled for 4 November 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to News24, Mandela has \u201cput up his hand\u201d for the position, signalling his willingness to be considered for the mayoral role as part of the ANC\u2019s internal candidate selection process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nomination forms part of ongoing regional consultations within the ANC, in which local branches and party structures propose candidates before provincial and national leadership grants final approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The KSD Local Municipality, situated within the OR Tambo District Municipality, remains one of the Eastern Cape\u2019s most politically significant municipalities. However, it continues to face mounting governance pressures, including persistent service delivery backlogs, deteriorating infrastructure, unemployment, and broader socio-economic challenges affecting communities across the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mandela\u2019s possible appointment would mark a return to a direct governance role following his tenure as an ANC Member of Parliament from 2009 until 2024. During his time in Parliament, he served on several committees and participated in national legislative processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within ANC structures, his emergence as a leading contender is being viewed as part of a broader strategy to deploy experienced political figures into municipalities ahead of what is expected to be a highly contested local election cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement shared on Instagram, Mandela framed his possible candidacy as a commitment to rebuilding communities and restoring grassroots leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI believe leadership is not about power, but presence, and I am committed to bridging and reconciling our broken communities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor too long, our city has been overlooked and our growth stifled. This campaign is not about political victory, it is about service over self-interest and the long arc of justice over short-term wins.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that every decision he makes would be guided by whether it uplifts vulnerable communities, heals divisions, and strengthens institutions beyond individual leadership terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI do not seek this title for glory, but to shoulder the responsibility of reminding our community that ubuntu lives in us all,\u201d Mandela said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy mission is to serve, to foster growth, and to uplift our people so they become self-sufficient, empowered, and thriving.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
