South Africa\u2019s celebratory mood marking 32 years of democracy was quickly overshadowed by the announcement that the country\u2019s unemployment rate had risen by 1.3 percentage points to 32.7% in the first quarter of 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The increase translates into more than 300,000 South Africans losing their jobs in just three months. Official unemployment has now remained above 30% for more than five consecutive years, placing South Africa among the worst-performing labour markets in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The crisis has deepened already extreme levels of inequality, prompting Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz to describe South Africa\u2019s condition as an \u201cinequality emergency\u201d during the G20 summit held in Johannesburg last year. The wealthiest 10% of South Africans control approximately 86% of the country\u2019s wealth, while the bottom 90% share just 14%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than three decades after the end of Apartheid, those figures reinforce a growing belief that political freedom has not translated into meaningful economic transformation for the majority of the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirty-two years after South Africa\u2019s first democratic elections brought formal Apartheid to an end, the country remains caught between the promise of political freedom and the unfinished struggle for economic justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
