The semi-official Tasnim news agency, citing a military source, said an investigation found that American forces had attacked two small boats carrying people\u2019s cargo from Khasab on the coast of Oman toward Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cFollowing the false claim by the US military that it had targetted 6 Iranian speedboats, since none of the IRGC combat vessels had been hit, an investigation was conducted into the nature of the claim from local sources,\u201d the source was quoted as saying, referring to Iran\u2019s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Five civilian passengers were killed in the attack, the military source said, describing it as a \u201chasty\u201d move driven by US \u201cfear\u201d of IRGC fast-boat operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u00a0Two US Navy destroyers transited the Strait of Hormuz and entered the Persian Gulf after fending off an Iranian barrage involving missiles, drones and small boats, according to a US media report on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The USS Truxtun and USS Mason, supported by Apache helicopters and other aircraft, were targetted by a series of coordinated Iranian attacks during the passage, CBS News reported, citing US defence officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Neither vessel was struck despite the intensity of the attacks, the report added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
US Central Command (CENTCOM) said earlier that American helicopters were used to destroy \u201cIranian small boats threatening commercial shipping,\u201d saying the vessels were targetted during efforts to secure traffic through the strategic waterway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
CENTCOM also accused Iran of opening fire on US warships and commercial vessels on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Regional tensions have escalated since the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28, triggering retaliation from Tehran against Israel as well as US allies in the Gulf along with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A ceasefire took effect on April 8 through Pakistani mediation, but talks in Islamabad failed to produce a lasting agreement. The truce was later extended by US President Donald Trump without a set deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
