With corruption and impunity rife, South Africans were initially sceptical about yet another commission of inquiry when the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry was announced last year on 13 July by President Cyril Ramaphosa. However, it has since distinguished itself, with more tangible results beginning to emerge. The wheels of justice are slowly turning, and the net appears to be closing in on those implicated in widespread corruption, especially in the top eceholons of the country’s police force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Chaired by Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga, the Commission was established to investigate allegations first made by KwaZuluNatal Police Commissioner Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in July last year that criminal syndicates and political interference has deeply compromised South African law enforcement intelligence, and justice structures. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
As of late January 2026, the Madlanga Commission’s interim report identified 14 people for immediate investigation regarding alleged wrongdoing, including five senior SAPS officials and nine Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality officials. Additionally, 12 senior police officers were arrested in March 2026 regarding a tender fraud case investigated by the Commission. . <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Thus far, the Commission has heard explosive testimony regarding police organised crime, with focus on the Ekurhuleni and Tshwane Metro Police.
