US President Donald Trump said he is \u201cvery sad\u201d to see that the UK-US relationship is \u201cnot what it was\u201d after criticising British Premier Keir Starmer for taking \u201cfar too long\u201d to allow US forces to use British airbases to attack Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a telephone interview with The Sun tabloid published Tuesday, Trump said: \u201cIt\u2019s a different world, actually. It\u2019s just a much different kind of relationship that we\u2019ve had with your country before. It\u2019s very sad to see that the relationship is obviously not what it was.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Trump compared Starmer’s actions unfavourably with France\u2019s support for the strikes and with the backing of Mark Rutte, the NATO secretary general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHe has not been helpful. I never thought I\u2019d see that. I never thought I\u2019d see that from the UK. We love the UK,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Starmer said on Monday that the UK did not believe in \u201cregime change from the skies,\u201d defending his decision not to allow the use of UK bases for the initial wave of attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
However, he said the situation changed on Sunday when Iran\u2019s \u201coutrageous\u201d response became a threat to British people and British allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
On Sunday, a drone headed for a British base on the island of Cyprus was intercepted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Starmer has now agreed to the US request to use British military bases for \u201cdefensive\u201d strikes on Iranian missile sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
