Crime expert Andy Mashile says big budget required to fight crime, and smart policing is the way to go

Police minister Firoz Cachalia says that despite the reductions in the recently released crime stats, the situation on the ground remains very worrying.

He was speaking at the release of the crime statistics on Friday. Cachaclia reported that majority of violent crimes were down, but South Africa’s crime levels are still too high and law enforcement still has a long way to go.

Crime expert Andy Mashile, a former Interpol ambassador, says that with significant budget increase the situation is unlikely to change. He also argues that smart policing has to become the modus operandi if there was to be any chance of reducing crime.
