SA’s Kruger Park shuts down due to severe floods

LIMPOPO, SOUTH AFRICA – JAN. 16: South Africa’s world-famous Kruger National Park suspended day visits due to severe flooding caused by heavy rains pounding the country’s northeast.

South African National Parks (SANParks) announced that torrential downpours in the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces have rendered parts of the reserve inaccessible, particularly in the north.

“The decision to temporarily suspend day visits… remains in effect until further notice,” the agency stated, citing extensive road damage.

The Satara Rest Camp, the park’s second-largest accommodation facility, was flooded, prompting the successful evacuation of guests and staff without injury.

Park officials confirmed that the reserve’s wildlife, including the famous “Big Five,” is not currently under serious threat.

President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the flood-hit Limpopo region on Thursday to assess the damage, while local authorities announced a $244 million fund to repair crumbled infrastructure.
